Welcome to Integrated People!

Our Mission
To showcase the skills of people in developing countries and connect them with markets around the world.

Integrated People (IP) is an experiment organized by a group of college students.  We believe that donations will only exasperate global poverty since it is not sustainable; instead, we work on the market-based-poverty-alleviation paradigm.  By encouraging underprivileged people to showcase their skills with minimum investment (i.e. utilize recyclables and other minimum-input-resources), and setting up a communication infrastructure over cyber-space to connect them personally to retailers in the developed markets of the United States, we hope to seed "cottage start-ups" in the slums of non-industrial countries.

Integrated People has begun its efforts with parents at an elementary school by the name of Kiran School, located in an underprivileged area of Karachi, Pakistan: Lyari.  For now our experiment is working! We ask for your support so we can nurture our experimentation into an organization and have a bigger impact.  The infrastructure and business-model we are "playing with" is highly scalable and we would like to spread our efforts to other developing areas throughout the world.  As our organization grows, we will be taking advantage of geographic and cultural specific trash and recyclables such as sea shells, rags from tailors, coconut husks, plastic, etc.

Please feel free to send questions, feedback, and criticism to [email protected].

Above are images Karachi, Pakistan.  Some pictures display the piles of trash laying around the city.  By supporting IP handicrafts, not only are you providing an opportunity for countless families to be able to pull themselves out of the vicious generational cycle of poverty, but you are also aiding the import of recyclables from underdeveloped countries where there is a lack of infrastructure for processing.

In addition to the images of Karachi, there are  some of the flood relief efforts in Makli, Thatta, Sukkar, and Mirpurkhas, Pakistan. Integrated People is also experimenting with extending its reach into disaster relief areas such as these: We would like to help these victims rebuild their lives and get them on their feet with their own effort by giving them an opportunity to gain an income rather than simply handing out donations.  Furthermore, the effort will discourage the mess that disaster-relief areas turn into due to lack of recyclable waste management, in particular the mess caused by plastic bags in which all the donations come to them.  Efforts to integrate flood-relief work was made possible by a non-profit by the name of Never Ending Experiences of Earnest Deeds (NEEED) that is managed by the founders of Kiran School and is immersed in several development projects around Karachi.

Kiran School is a preschool for children and their parents within the underprivledged neighborhood of Lyari.  The school is meant to be a learning center for the whole family, and uses "self-grooming" classes, English conversation sessions, and job seeking etiquettes.  The school will be used as the first "Innovation Sandbox" center for Integrated People to accept crafts from artisans all over the Karachi area.
